Lead With Purpose
Effective boards are essential to nonprofit effectiveness, and yet too many board members lack an understanding of their role. To lead with purpose, board members need training, practical tools, and peer support.
The Lead with Purpose training series answers this call by preparing individuals to apply their skills, interests, and experiences to meaningful and productive nonprofit board service.
Developed and facilitated by BoardSource Governance Consultant Members, the Lead with Purpose training series includes eight virtual 90-minute sessions. The sessions are as follows:

Session 1
Nonprofit Fundamentals
Boards that lead with purpose are informed and equipped. Most people know nonprofits make our communities stronger, but few people know how they operate. In this session, individuals interested in serving on a nonprofit board or expanding their nonprofit knowledge will learn the characteristics of nonprofit organizations and how they are structured, governed, and funded.

Choosing Your Cause
Boards that lead with purpose share a passion for their cause. Did you know there are over 40,000 nonprofit organizations in Indiana? In this session, individuals interested in serving on a nonprofit board will explore their personal passions and learn how and where to find meaningful board service opportunities in their community.

Session 3
Financial & Legal Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards
Boards that lead with purpose know their role. In this session, individuals looking to better understand the responsibilities of board service will learn the essential legal and financial oversight accountabilities of the nonprofit board in alignment with leading practices.

Effective Staff and Board Roles
Boards that lead with purpose work as a team. In this session, individuals seeking to maximize the strengths and effectiveness of executive and board leadership will learn the complementary yet distinct roles that staff and board members play in nonprofit organizations.

Building a Thriving Board
Boards that lead with purpose govern with intention. In this session, individuals looking to improve the composition and functionality of a nonprofit board will learn best practices in recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, and how to build a thriving Board culture.

Setting Vision and Strategy
Boards that lead with purpose plan with vision and strategy. In this session, individuals looking to understand the board’s responsibility in setting vision and planning for a sustainable future will learn the four essential pillars of nonprofit organizational health and how to apply strategic planning best practices in each.

Fundraising Essentials for Board Members
Boards that lead with purpose aren’t afraid to fundraise. In this session, individuals looking to fulfill the fundraising responsibilities of nonprofit board membership will learn successful ways to engage in the four-part fundraising process.

Boards that lead with purpose empower high-performing committees. In this session, individuals seeking to maximize productivity through board committees will learn common structures and leading practices for effective committee functionality and leadership.
